Race matters but race-based policies had failed – Johnny Steenhuisen (New DA leader)

With the Democratic Alliance (DA) managing to retain its vote in by-elections (Although dropping in percentage) and Johnny Steenhuisen the new interim party leader (and Helen Zille looking as sour as ever), it had been a good weekend for the blue party.

However, not all went according to plan and the party post-Maimane had to concede defeat in by-elections in DA strongholds in the Western Cape. After a decade, the ANC won back a ward in Matzikama and at Tafelsig and Wesbank (which teh DA retained), the voter turnout saw a huge decline and even a bigger drop in voting. The DA brand and its infighting had to give up the hard work done which saw the ANC easily step in to take the reigns.

But Steenhuisen had called for the party to not “be a blue wobbly jelly”. It is going to take some serious magic and hard work to overcome certain obstacles but the Johnny factor could do it. With his Margaret Thatcher – Trump – PW Botha finger wagging, he could have something to say and make it happen.
