Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Ms Gabisile Shabalala has called on motorists to use the road with heightened caution this long weekend. This follows a crash that led to the death of three on R40 Road between Mbombela and Umjindi around 04h30 today.
The crash occurred when a side swipe collission took place between a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a sedan. It is suspected that one of the drivers was attempting to overtake before the collission happened. Both vehicles were coming from Mbombela direction.
After the collission the vehicles then overturned on the bridge on the side of the road.
The three perished at the scene. It is three females and they were all passengers. Two of the deceased were passengers in the SUV while the third victim was an occupant in the sedan.
The seriously injured driver of the SUV was rushed to kiaat Hospital in Mbombela.
The driver of the involved sedan was still missing at the scene.
Earlier indications are that the drivers of both vehicles seemingly lost control after colliding and this led to vehicles veering off the road and overturning.
The investigation into the crash is underway.
According to MEC Shabalala, today’s crash is one of many deadly crashes that could have been avoided had greater care been taken.
She has therefore urged motorists to avoid driving while they are tired or drunk.
“We need to bring to an end needless loss of lives on our roads. It is unfortinate for us to be losing lives at this rate due crashes that could be avoided,” the MEC said.
She had earlier visited the scene.
