R11 million statue of OR Tambo stored in warehouse

The statue of struggle icon, OR Tambo that the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has spent more than R11 million on two years ago, is currently being stored in a warehouse. It should have been unveiled in 2017 to mark his centenary year. However, the ANC and local arm of the party in Ekurhuleni’s indecision, had relegated this statue to a warehouse.

According to a media statement, the ANC had not given any clear communication as to when it would eventually be unveiled. A brave member of the area’s Mayoral Committee said it would happen next month.

With a RDP house costing the government just more than R130 000, R11million could have provided 84 poor families with homes. OR Tambo would have preferred that to being hidden at such cost. He lived and died for his people.
