The number of Mpumalanga learners registered to write Mathematics and Physical Science in the upcoming grade 12 examinations, had declined by more than 10 000. That is according to Mpumalanga Education Department MEC, Bonakele Majuba.
When addressing the media about the department’s state of readiness to manage the upcoming grade 12 final examinations, Majuba said he was worried about the learners’ lack of interest in math and science. Last year, 34 643 candidates registered to write mathematics, while this year only 28 177 registered.
Last year 28 131 candidates registered to write physical science compared to this year’s 24 044.
“Our desire as a department is that we make sure that more learners register and pass maths and science since they are subjects that are very important towards the attainment of critical skills the province needs for economic growth,” said Majuba.
According to him, reasons could be perceptions that the two subjects are too difficult
“We, therefore, want to request all the stakeholders to always encourage learners to take these subjects because they are very important and they are not as difficult as everyone thinks they are,” said Majuba.
