Maths academy trashed by robbers and equipment stolen

A hundred computers and monitors were stolen at a math, science and technology academy in Emalahleni (Witbank).

According to information, fifteen suspects with balaclavas overpowered security guards at OR Tambo Academy to gain access to the building. It is believed the guards were assaulted and tied down before the perpetrators went on their rampage. Damage to the building itself was thought to be more than R3 million.

The Academy had been in existence for five years and celebrations were already being planned. The R100-million Academy had been hugely successful in ensuring superb education. The MEC for Education, Bonakele Majuba had condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms and called on the Witbank police to leave no stone unturned to locate the robbers and bring them to book.

“We cannot allow enemies of progress to triumph. We would continue to ensure the Academy continues to be a reservoir of progress. This act is very bad because it seeks to take our province and its citizens backwards. The OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy had been established as an incubator programme for learners who passed Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology,” said Majuba.

The Department requested the community who may have information to contact Sergeant Mokoena on 078 017 6602 or Colonel Thobejane on 079 891 5845.
