Lion bone smugglers nabbed at OR Tambo

The Green Scorpions arrested three suspects in connection with illegal lion bone smuggling at OR Tambo airport in Gauteng.

A suspicious shipment of 12 crates with lion bones in tin foil was successfully stopped. The shipment weighing more than 300kg showed false product declaration.

In a joint effort by the Hawks, Ekurhuleni Metro Police, Police Crime Intelligence and the Green Scorpions, one person is behind bars while investigation continues.

The minister of Fisheries, Environment and Forestry, Barbara Creecy said, “The success of the joint operation once again confirms that the sharing of information and collaboration between the different law enforcement entities is key in South Africa’s fight against wildlife crime.”

It is heart-breaking however to realise how many lions were killed.
