Blackstone is flying high the Mpumalanga flag

Blackstone (Given Thabo Sambo) is a house/gcomo-artist and actor from Mahushu outside Nelspruit. His music career took off in the early 90’s when he was in high school. He told NewsHorn that he had been inspired by the timeless music of the O’jays, Michael Learns to Rock, the Manhattans and that of Phil Collins. As a teenager, it was daily played in his home.

He imitated Zola, Mzambiya, Mawilies and Mapaputsi until he started writing his own songs. His journey in hip-hop started with the group Wajamoswhere. He then switched to kwaito later formed a duo with his cousin in 2015. His solo career as “Blackstone” started in 2018 when he relocated to Johannesburg.

“I recorded my first single titled “Umlilo” featuring YouturnStunner from Richards Bay. It was downloaded 12 000 times in 2 weeks aftef release.  It pushed me to work with F-eezy, Maseven and Dj Bopstaretcon his album  “Black And White” Sambo said.

He had performed in Republic of 94 in Braamfontein, at the Lowveld Show Ground in Mbombela, the Bush Paradise in Hazyview, to name a few. Reveller saw him at the Moshito Annual Festival in Gauteng and at KatibaPark situated in Bramfischer. He had so far shared the stage with  Moozlie, Sjava, Random Reciepe from Canada, Zola, Rouge, Trompie, Reason, Busiswa, Bucie and many others and had become a household name.

“Early this year,  I got a leading role in an upcoming drama series “Emkonti.” Since then he had appeared on  Generations, The Legacy, The Queen, The Throne and Queen Sono where he worked with well known South African actors. He signed a contract with Deep Breath Film Productions which works with Mzansi Magic and recently scored a clothing deal with a Pretoria-based fashion designer. He now even has a designer shirt, “The Blackstone Shirt” named after him. As an ambassador of TailorMadeMe and the A.V SkhothaneBrand, the talented Mpumalanga export had also become known as a natty dresser.
