Accident in KNP – visitors injured and giraffe killed

VEHICLE ACCIDENT INJURES FOUR PEOPLE AND CLAIMS GIRAFFE’S LIFE

A vehicle with 13 day visitors on their way to Letaba was involved in an accident North of Mopani in the Kruger National Park (KNP).  Preliminary reports indicate that a giraffe stepped into the road and the combi hitting. The giraffe fell on top of a  rented safari vehicle with two occupants. The driver of the rental vehicle, a Swiss national was seriously injured and the passenger suffered minor injuries.

Medical personnel rushed to the scene of the accident where the Swiss driver was stabilised before being airlifed to a medical facility. He is in a critical condition. Two of the Combi’s occupants  were also treated for minor injuries.

The Police is investigating the crash. Meanwhile SANParks appealed to the public to always be alert for animals crossing the road in the Park. Animals always have the right of way.

“We are approaching the festive season in a month’s time and encourage visitors to plan their trips between gates and camps to eliminate speeding. Please also exercise caution as wildlife has no concept of traffic rules,” said  Isaac Phaahla, GM: Communications and Marketing.
